This year’s memorial takes place on Sunday 21 May.
The first International AIDS Candlelight Memorial was held in 1983. The cause of AIDS at this time was unknown with less than a few thousand AIDS deaths recorded. The coordinators initially wished to honor the memory of those lost to this merciless and enigmatic disease while demonstrating support for those living with AIDS. This continues to remain the focus of the event today.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, AIDS has claimed more than 28 million lives, with over 42 million now living with the virus. As AIDS continues to ravage communities around the world, the Candlelight has become a tangible vehicle for communities to take action by publicly mourning loved ones lost to AIDS, and by strengthening local and national commitments to fighting the pandemic. In small communities, the Memorial can help increase awareness and understanding, while promoting volunteerism and fundraising. In large cities, it unites a diverse spectrum of people who care about HIV/AIDS. In all cases, the event creates a sense of global solidarity, and generates worldwide attention.
Local observances of the Memorial vary from community to community. Each Coordinator has the opportunity to tailor the framework of the Candlelight Memorial to meet the particular needs of the people they are serving. Events can vary from a few friends gathering at a park or a place of worship to thousands of people marching through town holding candles and singing songs. There is no “right” way to organize a Memorial.
Please consider creating a PSA urging people to find out about, and attend their local memorial.

I need to tell you about something I have heard almost nothing about lately and it scares me. Congress will vote on the discriminatory Federal Marriage Amendment as early as June 2006. Your members of Congress need to hear from you, NOW! We need everyone to join in the fight! Go to HRC.org/VoteNo and sign the Million for Marriage Petition, then please spread the word to as many friends, family and online mailing lists as you can! When you fill out the petition and click Sign Now, a postcard with your name and address will automatically print out at the Human Rights Campaign headquarters. The HRC staff will hand-deliver each postcard to congressional offices on June 5 — the week of the Senate vote. Also make sure that you check the box to sign up for HRC’s online Action Network so they can keep you informed about next steps to fight the discriminatory amendment. Again, I cannot stress how important this is, we are talking about a FEDERAL law that would ban gay marriage. When you are notifying the people you know, please don’t forget your straight allies. Their support will be critical to defeating this amendment.

Did you know that there are still colleges and universities in this country that ban the enrollment of GLBT students? Thankfully, there is a group challenging these bans. They’re called the “Soulforce Equality Ride.” It’s a group of 33 young adults on a seven-week bus tour, confronting colleges that still ban the enrollment of GLBT people. I want you to stop by their website, equalityride.com, and learn more about the organization, the riders, and their experiences. It goes without saying that these folks deserve our support. So check them out today: www.equalityride.com. Thank you, ladies! Have a great one! Toodles!
If you’re looking for a PSA Idea, how about supporting the Equality Ride (www.equalityride.com)?
They’re looking for local support at each of the locations they’re visiting, and, of course, they still need to raise funds. If you want to support this grass-roots LGBT action, they’d be grateful to have a PSA that can be played on queercasts.
